April 2009 - Buried Treasure
Some of the finest art ever made was never meant to be seen. Great art-making cultures such as Egypt and China created marvels from valuable materials such as gold and jade as well as clay and wood, and buried them in the hope that they would protect and honor their great ones through eternity. Some of them painted walls and furnished rooms in lavish style to provide perpetual luxury. This special SINGLE class will explore the objects and the beliefs behind them. Thursdays April 23 7:30 - 9:15. Cost of the class is $35. See Details page for directions to the studio and other helpful information.

March 2009 - Stories told by Clothes
In the old days, before we all took to wearing blue jeans, it was a lot easier to tell who was who. An Emperor dressed like an Emperor and a peasant dressed like a peasant, in part because there were sometimes rules about who could wear a certain color or type of garment. The style, cut, and decoration of clothing in art, sometimes even the cloth of which the clothing is made, speaks loud and eloquently about the details of life in almost all periods and cultures.
In this TWO-PART SERIES we’ll look at a fashion parade from history and have the fun of learning about those stories.
Thursday 3/12 and Thursday 3/19 from 7:00 - 8:45 . See Details page for costs, directions to the studio, and other helpful information.

February 2009 - Puzzle Paintings
Art speaks a magic language of symbols, double meanings, and hidden clues. Things are often not exactly what they seem, but instead can be many things with many different meanings. A still life, for example, may be a strange and wonderful puzzle full of intriguing meanings and hidden messages once you know where to look, and you'll be surprised how naughty a simple genre scene can be! This series will have a special focus on the art of the 17th century in Holland, the Dutch Golden Age, including the work of Rembrandt and Vermeer. After this series you will never pass a painting without searching for hidden clues! This will be a TWO-PART SERIES - Thursday 2/12 and Thursday 2/19, 7:00-8:45. Please see details page for cost, directions to the studio, and other helpful information.
