Burgundy: Art, History, and Wine

Before there was a strong and unified France, Burgundy was the seat of the richest, most powerful rulers in Northern Europe. The countryside, towns, and cities of Burgundy testify to this elegant, aristocratic past, with fabled buildings such as the Hospice de Beaune, (shown here) founded in 1433 as an almshouse for the poor. The city of Dijon, the great Romanesque Cathedral at Autun, the many historic villages, all give us a way to feel at home in a time far different from our own. With a jewel-like landscape of celebrated vineyards and towns with names like Chambertin and Meursault, this area is feast of pleasures of all kinds.
